A rendering of how the new Düsseldorf ­opera house would have looked, under Snøhetta’s designs. The firm won the competition in autumn 2025; in June 2026, the project was stopped for budgetary reasons.
Before and after: following the renovation, all three levels of the entrance hall are connected for the first time, by voids.
Red visibly exposed concrete walls define the entrance area and the ­enclosed ramp accessing the basement.
In the entrance hall, the edges of the cross laminated timber ceiling slabs bordering the gallery levels are visibly exposed.
The motif of the ­vertical slats is recalled in the interiors. Flooring materials in different colours ­provide orientation and define the inte­rior design together with the wood elements.
