On the upper floors, sections of the floor slabs are repurposed as trestles that support a tabletop made of recycled wood.
The large roof comprises nearly 12 000 glass blocks. For its energy efficient renovation, Itten+Brechbühl and the glass-concrete experts of Semadeni developed a new roof structure matching current insulation standards.
The planning team dissolved the horizontal organization and detached entire ceiling sections from their bearings.
Only above the historic merchant sailing ship, an open view to the skies unfolds. Exhi­bi­tion halls are suspended within the other four gallery apertures.
Tipping the pretensioned slab sections leads to a change in the load path, wich concentrates along the lower edge.
From floor to floor, the construction and weight of the tables consisting of pretensioned ceiling slabs changes: On the ground floor, two long strips are stacked.
The teardrop-shaped exhibition halls are suspended from the circular ceiling apertures along only three bearing points. The skylight provides glare-free daylight and a view ­towards the skies.
Tilted prestressed ceiling slabs become staircases connecting all levels. The sandblasted structure remains unfinished, the traces of earlier fastenings are visibly exposed.
