In many parts of Spain natural stone was a major element of regional building traditions, until stone was replaced by brick and reinforced concrete. This is also the case on the Balearic islands. For the eight social housing units located on the northern outskirts of Palma de Mallorca, the public housing developer of the islands, the Instituto Balear de la Vivienda (IBAVI) used the traditional building material once again. Walls and load bearing columns consist of natural stone, as well as the vaulted ceilings above the ground floor. The reddish-beige sandstone is extracted roughly 18 km away from the building site within the municipal area of the island capital city.
