Only a stone’s throw away from Santiago Calatrava’s new Guillemins train station, the architects’ offices MDW and H+G have erected a supermarket that is one of the most environmentally ambitious buildings of its kind in Belgium. The new-build is located inside a triangular urban block which, on its eastern edge, borders the River Maas. The Delhaize Group had already operated a supermarket here, which was surrounded by huge swathes of asphalt (it even had parking bays on the roof). Furthermore, the building blocked pedestrian circulation across the site. To overcome these disadvantages, the new supermarket was moved to the southern edge of the plot, making way for a landscaped area (also designed by MDW) in front of the supermarket.
