Reports: The Sancaklar Mosque in Istanbul
The small mosque, designed by Architect Emre Arolat in Büyükçekmece, on the edge of Istanbul, has become an international media star. The daily press in Germany, for example, has reported widely on this unusual place of worship. Even before it was completed, claims were made that its realisation marks a new chapter in Turkish mosque architecture. In light of the zeal with which President Erdoğan has promoted historicism and monumentalism in designs for new mosques, this comparably modest example could be seen as a sign that modernisation is conceivable.
