The former Fodor Museum, designed in 1861 by Cornelis Oudshoorn, and the rear buildings of two adjoining properties were placed at the disposal of the new design institute. The comprehensive rehabilitation programme included the reconstruction of all foundations, walls and floors and the roof. The basement and upper floor in the rear buildings were linked via a so-called "collector", a ten-metre-high steel framework housing the memory of the institute: library, design collection, computer, communications and reproduction facilities.
